Text messaging to large groups of friends. 00:54, 00:59 Twitter is a web based service, where you can sign up for free, and get a Twitter account. 00:59, 01:07 Here you can post short text messages called tweets about anything really. It's very similar to an email account. 01:07, 01:09 So, why not just use email? 01:09.5, 01:21 Amber, there's a big difference between Twitter and email. And it's where the beauty of Twitter really shines. In fact, think of Twitter as exactly the opposite of email. 01:22, 01:33 With email, the sender determines who the message goes to. As a result, we get all kinds of email with stuff we want, and tons of spam that we don't want. 01:34, 01:45 But Twitter turns that completely around. With Twitter, it's not the sender who determines who gets their tweets. It's the recipient who signs up for the tweets they want to receive. 01:45, 01:51 To really understand Twitter, let's look at how most users sign up and use Twitter. 01:51, 01:58 Let's say I go to Twitter.com and sign up for an account. I then go through their membership and determine who I want to hear from. 01:58.5, 02:07 For example, personally I like to get tweets from Go Daddy Girl and pro golfer Anna Rawson, and news from the BBC. 02:07.5, 02:17 Now let's say for one reason or another, I no longer want to get somebody's tweets. Try to send one or two each and every day. 02:29, 02:37 Send important nuggets about your business. Or special offers. Or maybe just fun and interesting observations. When you follow someone, they're notified that you are following them. And there's a good chance they will follow you in return. 03:27, 03:38 When this happens, it begins to snowball. People you follow, follow you. The people who follow the people who you follow, follow you.
