All excellent advise... clear and concise pathway to negotiations... only comment is the statement about going into a negotiation expecting the worse is counter to the rest of the message. Winning negotiaters must go into the negotiation expecting a win. A positive attitude is a must in order to achieve a positive result.

I purchase products from a different competitor of GoDaddy.com now finding out that is you I'll see about moving over. Love the Video Blogs so cool. I haven't kept up the now day trends and realized now I need to get back in the groove after watching your marketing strategies. I got older and set in my ways. I shouldn't have done that. I am a branding consultant and I hate your branding. Your product has nothing to do with big busted women. It really has nothing to do with your own personal style, Bob.

Your business works because you have easy to use domain name registration, you are not evil like Verisign, and you have great server products and pricing. And you have the best, most consistent, most knowledgeable and courteous 24/7 technical support I have ever seen. Anyone who manages their own website can rely on your company to keep them up and running.

So then, why are you risking the whole business in order to keep offending people with your T/A ads? They are all in poor taste, poorly written, poorly acted, poorly directed schlock. You are driving good clients away from your company and damaging your business by foolishly wasting money on the spots, the ad placement, the spot production, and the fees you are paying to celebrities like Danica Patrick to be on your ads.

The first ad, making fun of the Jackson "wardrobe failure" was funny, and got your name out there.

Everything since has hurt your business, and now you seem hell-bent on making yourself like like an arrogant, immoral, hothead. Stop!

Set your sites on being what you are... a quality, service-conscious, customer-centric business. Stop trying to impose images of libido and sexuality and soft porn into all your advertising!
A few years ago you had smiling faces of women on the site... That was OK... but now the shots are obviously designed to appeal to male lust. I'm a male but I'm offended. And I know most self-respecting women, who don't want to be thought of as sex objects, would be (and ARE) offended too. I am certain you are at a tipping point and about to lose a ton of hosting and email business.

I will not be entering your spot contest ...the prizes are too small. But if I were given $5000 I could produce a spot and branding approach that would genuinely succeed in the market place ... and give you a nice vacation from your role as a spokesman, too.

Sincerely,
Owen Kindig

Yo Bob, Why don't you open GoDaddy East in your old hometown of Baltimore. There's plenty of empty space in commercial buildings. You could get some talent from Johns Hopkins. You might loosen some of the Hopkins geeks up a bit, which would be a good thing. If you pick the site of your operation carefully, you might have a sign that gets shown on TV when the Ravens play. And no one here would ask where you got that accent.

Great video blog and man it's all true. I negotiate and work with negotiators dealing with short sales on homes. The hardest thing is trying to stay calm in the face of complete stupidity. This one tip probably saves 1/2 of the deals we are negotiating.

Hi Bob,

First time viewer of your video Blog, good stuff!

I have a question on "when to give a little or walk away from negotiations". During negotiations at what point do you feel you are "giving" to much and should walk away?

In other words, during negotiations sometimes you have to give a little in order to gain. Is there a critical time when you can use this to your advantage and give a little to get a larger deal point that you want, and do you find that there is a "trigger" to tell when you are giving to much or the client is requesting to much, and you should walk away from the negotiations?

Thanks

Of course, Bob, many of our enemies, politically speaking — use deception and threats in their negotiations. For that situation only the prospect of massive retaliation works to equalize the process. I suppose that's part of the advanced seminar on negotiations. By the way, Leanne's beauty is proof of God's existence. And we didn't even have to negotiate that — it was a gift.

Hi Bob, enjoy catching up on what you're up to. Always good advice, thanks for sharing the knowledge. However, have a question. I believe your team is under strict secrecy on the whereabouts of your European servers. I ask because I would like to become a reseller of your products, however marketing a product when not knowing a location is difficult, Europe is a different egg to the US. A server based in one country would be viewed very differently to another. I am trying to be diplomatic here. Some countries in Europe i.e. new entrants to the EU would be regarded as dubious and are considered a no go for the moment. By non disclosure of say the country would imply that is where they are. You guys view Europe as a single entity but everyone who lives in it does not. Regards

Bob,

I am in the process of opening up my first Nutty Idea store. Your points are dead on . . . I have been blessed in honing my negotiating leases skills over the years with my other company.

The willingness to walk away is a huge point. This most recent location I've worked on for 8 months and I have walked away twice - it works!

I am going to end up paying about a 3rd of the going rate of the sq ft price in the town and locked in the first 5 years at a LOW flat rate. . . I love negotiating, so much fun!

You're right on, Bob. Your 6-min. presentation teaches more than the $1,000 course from that K-guy you always read about in those "in flight" magazines in airplanes. If you're negotiating to build a business relationship and both parties don't walk away happy, then things will go bad down the road. Another lesson I learned is: don't let the other guy "bully" you. If he gets too aggressive tell him to take a hike.

Negotiating is just like a relationship, in that, the one that loves the least rules the relationship. Bob is right about not falling too in love with the deal.
Dan on Jan 24 2010, 04:50pm  Reply
Bob: Just visitied your sight and watched the "Negotiations" VLOG. I'm amazed at the variety of comments thathave been left.
Does it strike you that some of those that are "offended" by the presentation are really exposing their own insecurities and unwillingness to accept the roles of men and women in commerce. Both are "used" in similar ways daily and when the "use" is kept in reason and done consensually, there is no abuse or disrespect projected. Leann's presence and actions here are no different from the role that Goldie Hawn played on Laugh-In so long ago - cute, funny and lighthearted.
Hence, if these people are inspired to feel slighted or besmirched by it, then perhaps it is some form of insecurity, prejudice or inordinate sexual preoccupation inherent in their minds and not those of the rest of us.
You're right - they ought to just "Chill out" and not make more of it than it is.
One of the tenets of our society is that everyone has the right to pursue their interests as long as doing so does not hurt or abridge the rights of others. If they don't like what you're saying, or the way it is being presented, then they always have the option to go elsewhere.
As for your message being simple and perhaps not original - the fact is that you go with what works and what works is what is simple, tried, tested and proven by history. The definition of wisdom is that it is the results that one has gained from the lessons learned during the mistakes that one makes along the way. So, the wiser one appears today tells us that the person either made many mistakes themselves, OR was wise enough to learn from the errors and experiences of those who went before them. One need not reinvent the wheel to get things rolling!
Thanks for the common sense approach. As Mark Twain pointed out so long ago, "Common sense is unfortunately , not all that common" so its presence is seen as a breath of fresh air.

Bob, thanks mate for the straight shootin' negotiation tips. I realised that I need to hard up, and be prepared to walk away from the deal if the real 'odds are' , are not in my favour.

Meaning, if I am not truly getting what I really want, I will be resentful later and the deal will likely go bad. Sounds basic, but I have been Mr Nice Guy for too long. I dig your brutal honesty and would feel comfortable negotiating a deal with you.

I like the content of the video, but I'm not crazy about the gratuitous blonde. I think it markets well to men but it probably comes off as slightly offensive to women. Since women comprise a large share of internet/web/computer professionals, your target market, my suggestion would be to tone down the "I've got hot babes and so can you" message. Surely you can find some middle-of-the-road position that would make those of us intelligent female Go Daddy customers feel a little less devalued. Aren't you looking to market your services to brainy women, too? How about some "hot" brainy women to help you deliver your message? I'm available by the hour! Anyway, that's my opinion. Thanks for your advices but you should know that even before the negotiation process starts, people in a positive mood have more confidence, and higher tendencies to plan to use a cooperative strategy. During the negotiation, negotiators who are in a positive mood tend to enjoy the interaction more, show less contentious behavior, use less aggressive tactics and more cooperative strategies. This in turn increases the likelihood that parties will reach their instrumental goals, and enhance the ability to find integrative gains. Indeed, compared with negotiators with negative or natural affectivity, negotiators with positive affectivity reached more agreements and tended to honor those agreements more. Those favorable outcomes are due to better decision making processes, such as flexible thinking, creative problem solving, respect for others' perspectives, willingness to take risks and higher confidence. Post negotiation positive affect has beneficial consequences as well. It increases satisfaction with achieved outcome and influences one's desire for future interactions.

Great video bob! What you said about listening to the other side is great advice. Often times I go into a meeting stuck to my agenda and my plan not realizing I need to to listen first and respond to what they're saying. That way I can make a better case for myself if I'm including their ideas and taking them seriously. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Bob,
I have a vblog suggestion; For those of us who have managed a level of success, could you please provide some insight how to get to a new level?
Incremental moves are wonderful, but how do you truly transcend to someplace new? Are there steps to take? Do you commit all the wealth you've made or do you seek someone to invest with you? What parameters are there? Once you've succeeded at a certain level, moving up an order of magnitude or more is a process that's not easy or obvious. Even if you are convinced of your capability.

And, M. Parsons, you can never be thanked enough for your videos - great job and please keep them coming!

Bob, I've been a huge fan of yours since reading your article that was published last year in Playboy. The story was awesome, but your quote that "you can make big money getting paid nickels-as long as you have enough people giving them to you" literally saved my company and helped develop another that is starting to show some independnce at the end of its first year. I can't thank you for your contributions enough. As I watched 85 local competitors dissipate in last years economy I could only try to not think about it, that we might be next. I Plastered that Playboy article of yours to the right of my desk on my memo board as a reminder of what I needed to do. I feel blessed to be not only in business but to be solid on my feet by following your advise. This VLOG couldn't have come at a better time, on Monday we are meeting with a manufacturing plant to discuss national distribution. #31 negotiate
Good points but one was missed.
You must place yourself in their shoes to see where any of the objections are coming from. You do this, in part, before you even start.
In other words, the other person doesn't want to cave in just because you want something. Here you might give something to sweeten the deal and they leave the table with a "face saving" something.

Damm how many times have we seen that one.......the reality here is that its not something new or even original..its weather or not the individual actually used the information to gain any benefit.

I cant tell you how many great ideas I have had and although I impressed my friends and others with my energy and amazing verbiage.they all lacked one fundamental thing........Action.........without action any idea is a dream un fulfilled.......I hope that your wisdom and advice helps as many people as I have had hot dinners...........good luck to you and everyone that takes the time to read and watch....

InspireWear INC,

I like your website but telling GoDaddy to stop doing what works (thus keeping the company healthy and #,000 jobs in the USA) is like me telling you that I like your website but noticed you are a raciest because you ONLY have black people in every pic! That is in direct conflict with God's message that you are selling. Doesn't God love people of ALL colors?

Sadly sensuality sells. A pic of a hot chick on any YouTube video gets a million hits a day but try posting educational life saving information without any sex (as I have done) and get 100 views a year thus not getting my message out.

You run your business and let GoDaddy and I run ours. May we all succeed but if GoDaddy goes under ALL of our businesses may sink with them and not thousands but millions more USA jobs lost in the process.

I say Go for it GoDaddy even if sexy sales gals do not fit into my business marketing plans (or married with a daughter) lifestyle.

When GoDaddy does a commercial where Jimmy Jones or Earhardt Jr. or other racer is stopped for speeding by a male cop, who then does a strip tease and pretends to kiss him, etc., then it'll be fun, funny and yes, even sexy. (Not)

Switch the female cop with a beefcake male cop, and I won't have as much of a problem. It'll still be gratuitious, but it won't be directed toward male's fascinationwith two women...

Imagine your website not working because the hosting company only does PC ads and goes broke! ALL of your work and your business would just stop after running poorly and with support form INDIA or Nigeria etc...

These points are juvenile at best for any person who has been in sales for more then 2 months. Please do something important with the billions of dollars you are bilking people out of for low end cookie cutter website that will never see the light of day. And the New Jersey earring is a tad bit too much, over 40 don't wear one - people might not take you seriously at the table. And don't be shy when this goes through the queue - just post it.
N on Jan 6 2010, 05:42pm  Reply
1.) you made a grammatical error by using the word 'then'. The correct use is 'than'.
2.) So how's your sales career going? If I were to compare Bob's success to yours, I doubt you'd be anywhere close.
So, before you criticize someone of Bob's caliber, look in the mirror... and if you happen to be wearing an earring - or two - it's okay, nobody wants to buy from a sniveling wus anyway. Good luck with your 'mature' sales position.
PS. Why wouldn't Bob post your gutless drivel? He's not a coward like you.
John Sykes on Jan 7 2010, 09:38pm  Reply
Do yourself a favor and get an education from the school of hard knocks. If an earring offends you, maybe you should try wearing a garter belt so no one will see it and maybe you too will have a shot at making a billion. If that doesn't work, there are plenty of openings lifting manhole covers from the streets in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Mike on Jan 6 2010, 08:10pm  Reply
Dear "N":

We don't "bilk" anyone out of anything - let alone "billions" of dollars. As for low-end cookie cutter websites — well, there isn't enough time in the day for me to cite the thousands of websites we host that are well known by the average guy/gal. Also, I'm from New Jersey and have never heard the phrase "New Jersey earring" .....

Have you read this book? Your rules are based on smart business practice, or you would not take the time to help people as you do. Again a reference to the book mentioned. Life is a negotiation as you well know but a individual that understands the Win Win tactic will come out ahead in the long run and a lot better off for it. Right on Bob... and selling is negotiating...
I've been in sales for 30 years. The problem most salespeople have when selling is that they don't first make sure they're dealing with a decision maker. The next-most common mistake is that they don't have a clear objective before they start.

I'll make it short and sweet... some of what you said I already use in negotiations daily and it definitely works. It is good advice to walk away sometimes and not fall in love with a deal always, which I learned the hard way too. Viva la Bob. Always good advice, every time, thanks a million. - Josh

I've been a long time supporter of Dave Ramsey and his straight talk about money management and trying to help others. But of course this got me thinking. Dave Ramsey is paid to give out advice to others and though I'm sure a lot of it is from his personal trials as well, I'm sure their is also que cards involved. You could be out riding your ducati in germany or sailing the world. Yet you are taking the time to help others, with the knowledge you have attained, through trials and success. My personal business would not be here if I wasn't willing to change my business plans and keep improving as I learned more from both customers and employees. And negotiations moved me from a garage to buildings and buildings: From all of us little guys, I thank you.

How could you?
How could you use pretty girls to promote your videos and website?
I can't concentrate, I can't get anything done. All I do is think about women now. I used to be functional. Now I am "blind"..
Please adopt me since I am now ruined for life.
Don't you feel the least bit guilty for doing what anyone else would do?
Who do you think you are" Tiger Woods?
Kennedy? Kobe?

I think it's so silly of people to chide you for using pretty women who Choose to be here. Who obviously see the possibility of being discovered, etc.. Yet there is always going to be that handful of prudes, and idiots who will try to censure someone who successfully promote his/her business. Less than 10% of your viewers are "concerned" and to them I say, "get a life for Christ's sake".

Like another blog entry, while I'm impressed with GoDaddy, your commercials are sub-standard, IMO. In fact, when one came up on TV the other day, I was sorry that our kids had to be exposed to it. These were just in very poor—raunchy—taste, IMO.

Bob,

For almost a decade, I worked for Deutsche Post (DHL) in Scottsdale. I was in their Business Technology & Innovation department where I was the sole inventor of numerous technologies for the transportation logistics industry. Currently I have almost a dozen global patents in my name but unfortunately when I resigned from the company they retained ownership of my inventions.

My question is this: What is the best way to find private investors needed to raise a few million to develop my next innovations with? I want to make sure I am not taken advantage of again. A billion dollars in technology innovations for a lousey $7, 500. wasn't a great deal for me. A killer deal for them of course. I'm sick of getting screwed over and having people take advantage of me.

I'd gladly contribute $100. bucks to your favorite charity for 10 minutes of your time. (May not be a lot of money for you but it's small fortune for my family.)

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Dear Brian,
What you don't state is your motive, as to WHY your seek such funding, and state your use of funds.

I agree with Bob's reply.
The best method of funding a new venture is through self funding, or accounts receivables.
I have prosecuted Television Applications, and I have been witness to watching great businessmen go broke thinking they can borrow their way to riches. You'd think a television station is a license to print cash. Note Ture! Even if you own it free and clear.
Billc (http://www.gandassociates.weebly.com) on Jan 1 2010, 11:33am  Reply
Thanks Bill for the feedback. I'm very familiar with self funding a venture. I've owned a computer service company, software company, a few business centers and have three new start-ups I am in the process of self funding. I was curious about private investors because if you can establish those type of relationships with individuals that have deep pockets and are comfortable with your past successes, you can move faster and many times have an advantage over your competition. Since I never looked for investors before I though maybe Bob had some insight as to if investors were a good idea. In any event, thanks for the response, it's all good.
Brian on Jan 4 2010, 09:24am  Reply

Its unfortunate you got a "lousy 7500 bucks" for your inventions but that was "work for hire" ... correct?

Sorry dude; but if you used their equipment, got a paycheck and negoiated or marveled at the small bonus for a job well done. Thats it.

Now, as for future inventions and funding of your projects might I suggest : the plan, prototype, patent "filing" and then marketing for investors or better yet the END-USERS.

With todays technology you can pre-sell or manufacture on-demand; these are a few suggestions on paying for your venture.

While you didn't directly ask me, but Bob, in good cheer forward a mere 10% of your contribution to MY favorite charity — HWH House, they provide homeless veterans permanent housing.

While it may take a lot of sacrifices both financial and emotional , however, if you believe in your ability and can produce without an employer guided mission—GO FOR IT!

Good Luck,

Leslie,

Thanks for your response. Don't get me wrong, I had the best job in the world and the very fact that I received any form of compensation for my inventions was a blessing. (Even that lousey $7,500 <smile>;) It is only now that I reflect on the value of what was delivered that I realize my next innovations hold equal or greater value. I want to be able to develop them and obtain the greatest amount of compensation for them that is possible. There are a lot of needy people and charities I would be able to help. I don't need fancy cars, homes or bikes to waste my money on, just the ability to make the difference in someone elses life is enough. As far as HWH, I will look into their charity. I was in the Army for 8 years myself, including a tour during the original Operation Desert Storm and I can appreciate that some vets are not as fortunate as I was. Thanks again Leslie I appreciate your suggestions.

Best Always,

H Bob, great advice. I owned a construction company and bootstrapped everything, starting it with a tool box and ending with a shop full of tools & trucks. I got rid of it all, went to night school and went into corporate America. Investors and VC's will only leave you beholden to someone, you might as well just get a regular job. All of the greatest success stories in business started out this way. My advice to Brian would be to figure out how to self fund it.

I just can NOT believe that I must now find a way to get through my weeks without Radio Godaddy! This maybe isn't the place to vent this, but I feel the need to vent it someplace!

I always wondered how Bob could do it. Here we have a man who sure seems much more important than I myself do, yet he still managed the time to run a Radio Show that I barely had time to listen to myself. In fact, I catch in on my ipod when my time and life allow as my life and schedule just wont allow me to always be in front of a pc on time to catch it live....But BOB found time!

It just breaks my heart to turn on the podcast this week to hear the Click Chick saying that these were the last two shows! WTF!?!?

Listen Bob, I listen to a morning radio talk show here in Tampa FL every morning during my commute to work. Some mornings the host himself is not on the show, same as yourself. The difference is that when he can't make it in to work, his show lacks in a big way. Most days that he wont be on the show, I just don't bother tuning in and listening...and these guys are supposed to be professionals! So when I was listening to your podcasts and heard for the 1st time that you were not going to make it that week or maybe several weeks and the show must be carried by your co-hosts and whatnot, I almost just shut it off. It's become almost a reflex for me to just shut the show off when the host isn't going to be on. But to be fair, I gave them a chance on your show.

What I found is that I still find the show quite enjoyable even when you are not there. I STILL LISTEN! Obviously it's not as compelling without you, but it doesn't just suck either.

I'm going to miss Radio Godaddy. I have learned so much from the show. I hope you don't run out of time to also have to stop producing your video blog as well.

I feel like I have lost a dear friend. :(

Bobs radio show has not only informed me on many internet issues I am interested in, but it also made me a Godaddy customer again!

Many many years ago I used to have several few domains and hosting through Godaddy. Time went on, life changes happened, reality took over and I had to move on into a more tangible(for lack of better term) business.

Well I AM BACK! I got back online and back into working online a couple years ago. Well, for dumbass reasons I care not to discuss, I registered my domains elsewhere as well as hosting. Shortly after doing that, I found Bobs radio shows and Vlogs.

Long story short, listening to the show and watching the vlogs won me back over. I am now a Godaddy customer again. I just didn't feel right enjoying your shows and the time you spent producing them to then turn around and spend my money elsewhere. SO I switched.

True story! Maybe a bit dorky...but I yam what I yam. I didn't switch over for your customer service, didn't even do it for your prices or promotions. I did it for YOU Bob. I did it to at least feel loyal to those who bring, teach, and give me so much for free!

Have I mentioned how much I am going to miss Radio Godaddy!? Anyone wanna buy my ipod? It's now worthless to me!

Bob, Regarding: Anonymous, It has been my life long experience that people whom hide there name, often hide from themselves. If you do not "put yourself out there" then you cannot and will not be found. In turn, this means that anonymous persons are removing themselves from the abitlity to ever succeed. Additionally, such people are fast to criticise with a "hit and run, then hide". Safely, they do not chase those whom do not hide, and why would they when we have nothing to hide. Bob, you are using tried and true proven methodes of advertising and negotiating. I always say, "When you do not have a good idea, use someone else's good idea that you know works". More power to you Bob Parsons, In part because the suceess of your business could lead to the sucess of mine since yours is our web hosting server.

I understand the importance of schtick and imagine the one you've chosen is highly successful with the guys. I'm not sure you understand why most women find this demeaning. By slanting your ads towards men you convey that a woman would not be involved in an intelligent decision making process; such as what company to use for domain registration. Other than that I enjoy your lighhearted approach and find it very refreshing.

I'll further say that there is nothing in our commercials that indicates that a woman shouldn't be involved in intelligent decision making. Our GoDaddy Girls are among the brightest and sharpest women in the world. And the majority of GoDaddy.com's senior executives are women. A very well timed video blog Bob. Never heard of you before today and glad I did. I love to debate and negotiate. I made a call last week to the lawyers representing my ex-employer. They decided to let go of 30 of their long standing employees (18 years as an engineer). Me being one of them. I have been trying to contact a lawyer here who is an excellent labour lawyer but I continued to be put off because this guy is way to busy. So if you know me at all, you know I can debate and plead my case with the best of them so what the hell, I`m gonna save myself the $500.00/hour it was gonna cost me and I`m gonna go in and negotiate my severance pay with their lawyer. I decided this before I watched your video (hence the timing). I have already contacted them and am awaiting an appt. You have added some good points I wasn`t thinking about and I appreciate that. I will make sure to follow them as I sit across from them in the board room. Looking forward to it actually. So cheers to you Bob and of course the lovely Leann. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Hope Santa brings you many more ear rings, nose rings, whatever your heart desires cause ya know, thats what makes us all unique!

Hello Bob

I was prepared to find you a complete idiot because of your advertising - what is with the "girl" with the big boobs in a skimpy top? That type of advertising is so lowbrow - after seeing your video blog i do consider you a man with some intelligence and I would hope that you have evolved past the wow big boobs turn me on .. thing. Maybe to attract smart - intelligent woman to your site and keep them as customers - you should think about including everyone in your marketing scheme.

Dr. Bob, being constant reader of business and entrepreneurship books, I really like the way you summarized important points in a humorous yet constructive manner. Charisma and humour is an attribute of great inspirational speakers. Having set up succesful businesses before the advent of ecommerce, I have used your services to integrate my businesses to online marketing channels. Although succesful with your services, is there a faster way for me to get familiar with the web development side of it without having to pay an unreliable web programmer? Going back to the 17th of this month. "Jon from Vermont"....If you see the current add as degrading to women I hope you never look at anything really degrading....You might expire!!!! Bob does a great job of letting you see these ladies without making it porn like. Now for Lori's response.....Please do not fall into the trap of lumping people together. I AM A CHRISTIAN and in no way should I need to apologize for things that happened way back when!!! Just like my generation had nothing to do with slavery we also had nothing to do with the fanatical actions of so called Christians of days gone by. Obviously both of you missed the point of Bobs message!!! Never get angry or show your weakness!!!!!!
Dale in Colorado on Dec 21 2009, 09:51am  Reply
Dale, you're right. It was unfair for me to generalize that way and I apologize.

Jon hit a nerve. I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school until high school.

As a child, I was completely unprepared for my first period. The only way I learned anything about human reproduction was to walk, in the throes of my first period, to the library without permission and use their Internet connection and reference materials.

As a teen, I went straight from 8th grade Catholic school into public high school completely unprepared for the sea of raging hormones. By then, being lied to and denied the truth about so many things by my Catholic upbringing and education, I was willing to throw my lot in with anyone BUT the church and ended up making some bad decisions.

As an adult, I've seen good people ostracized for things like divorce, children out of wedlock, sexual identity, physical appearance, andy many other things one has little or no control over.

If there is a higher power, I can't imagine that he/she/it intended for us to conduct ourselves in a way that causes so much pain for so many.

I lurk on this blog and enjoy watching the videos and reading the discussions. This is basically a free business class where the unencumbered, unrestricted free exchange of experience and information benefits everyone who reads it and for someone to invade this hallowed space and criticize its proprietor on religious grounds just sets me on FIRE.

My initial inclination is to say that religion has no place in these discussions, but as an entrepreneur any industry where one might deal with vendors, partner sellers, and a wide customer base, it is inevitable that one will encounter judgmental, overbearing, holier-than-thou zealots who compulsively cram their faith down the throats of everyone they do business with. I suppose learning to tolerate it here might be good practice. Let the deal your first and only priority.

Thank you for setting me straight on that, Dale.

Peace and love,

Lori

Business lectures are not usually presented in a comedic fashion. Though, I have to say, what you wanted to get across, came through. A little too infomerical. The woman in the video was not neccessary at all. You could have got your message across all by your little ole self. Although pretty, the woman and her clothing were very unprofessional, therefore, the message you sent may not be taken seriously by other viewers. I applaud your genius (coming in on the ground floor) and apparent ability to foresee the future to create a masterful business that is flourishing. I wish you continued success.

Hey Bob (or whoever is reading this for him),

Just wanted to register my thoughts about GoDaddy's advertising. It sucks.

Sure - you guys are hauling in tons of leads because of them, but in turn, you're degrading women (I know..."oh the women agree to do this!" "It gives them power!"), you're contributing to the dysfunction of families (I know..."it's men's choice to watch the commercials!" "How can you seriously blame us for ruining families") and you look like idiots. Take like one minute and think about the things you say to yourselves to justify what you do. What kind of material are you adding to the fabric of our culture? There's hope for you guys - anything is possible and I'll be the first to sign-up for a domain name with you guys (I'm getting one soon) if you would HELP me and other dudes to look at women the way Jesus looked at women (the one at the well, caught in adultery, the prostitute).
Jon in Vermont on Dec 16 2009, 10:25am  Reply
Jon: as a woman, I find you more offensive than anything in GoDaddy's advertising. People like you are the reason that splattered brain matter and impaled torsos are ever-present on network TV and nudity isn't. The beauty of our human form and sexuality is treated as a threat while depictions of murder abound. Until you Christians make a REAL apology for the crusades, the witch burnings of Salem, and the alienation of your most fragile and confused members for the most minor breaches of your archaic, OBSOLETE concepts of morality, you have NO business lecturing ANYONE about morality. Bob, continue being a groundbreaking, kickass dreamboat and don't waste your time on hypocrites like Jon.
Lori on Dec 17 2009, 11:24pm  Reply
Jon, I do not believe for on nanosecond that anything that Bob and Go-Daddy are doing adds to the degradation of women in anyway, and the dysfunction of families are you kidding! Your dirty mind on the other-hand, is another story! You need to stop looking at woman in a perverted way. They are beautiful woman in T-Shirts for Gods Sake! They are not naked or grouping each other they are not prostitutes caught in adultery! Now get real. Jon I will only say this once DONT LOOK! If you cannot look at a beautiful woman in a T-Shirt and not have bad thoughts about them GO SEEK HELP! Please go to church and pray, and while you are at it say a prayer for the poverty stricken children of the world and leave the beautiful woman alone...
Troy (http://WWW.XXXOUTLETS.COM) on Dec 17 2009, 07:37am  Reply
Perhaps it's just me, but I think people who leave you messages telling anyone that they're contributing to the dysfunction of families are in the company of families that are together for the wrong reasons to begin with. Maybe it's just me, but looking at other women shouldn't be a crime. It's human nature.

Additionally, preaching religious overtones is never a good practice in a public forum without making yourself look like an ass.

Go Daddy is a great establishment, and your criticism of their advertising methods means absolutely nothing to them. They have their beliefs, and you should leave yours out of the equation when doing BUSINESS with them. If you don't like the advertising, don't watch the commercials.

And if your wife is getting angry that you're watching a commercial with a woman in it, skimpy clothing or otherwise, then you should really consider seeing a marriage counselor to solve the trust issues in your marriage. Same goes to anyone whose family is being broken up by a woman on a screen somewhere. Absolutely ridiculous and an insult to the meaning of marriage to begin with. Grow up.

How would you advertise a company with little or no money? How much money did you start out with with Parsons Technology? — I know you had millions with GoDaddy - but what about your first start up? The reason I'm asking is because I'm so very hard trying to get my business off the ground, and its very difficult doing so with limited funding. I'm trying forums, creating widgets, and offering companies services for links, and business. For example I made a attorneys website for a LLC am I doing the right thing? — I guess I need more of encouragement then anything else.

Hope You have a good one Bob
BTW — I can tell your losing weight, I'm proud of you dude!

You got to be kidding me. Someone real close to me worked your party recently where you gave out $1,000,000.00 in bonuses. Do you know that the people that waited on your tables were paid $11.00 dollars and hour and received a $16.00 tip?

A MILLION BUCKS in CASH PAYOUT BONUSES ! GREAT FOR YOU BOB PARSONS ! ! ! Keep up the great work. I wish I had people good enough in my operation that could place me in a position to " Share the Wealth". If this story is true than I am sure that you (Bob Parsons) made a business decision. As for the people that waited on your tables, $11.00 an hour is the same that I pay my "DAY LABORERS" and they are happy to get it. - Let me remind you, A DEAL IS A DEAL. Did I hear this right ? Bob Parsons tipped them an additional $16.00 ? - Great for you Bob, and Great for them - They were PAID OVER AND ABOVE THE DEAL ! ! ! Sounds like a great event, Oh and by the way, a tip is exactly that, a tip. I worked both as waiter and on another occasion as a bartender while owning my own arcade business while working at CHUCK E. CHEESE in the game room as a game room Technician. I wanted to find the most CASH that I could since I had heard about "tips", I found that the only good ones are in big business, not left at table.
John Cannon (http://www.arcademart.com) on Dec 17 2009, 12:39am  Reply
Yea, so what?

Just watching how Dr. Bob run his business tells me his is a true capitalist and I am sure the people that got the bonuses deserved every last cent.

This is because they used their intellect and ability to make Dr. Bob and GoDaddy, com and their stockholders a boatload of money.

I am sure that they worked hard and smart and were rewarded accordingly. That is what makes Capitalism so great!

So in essence, they are worth more than the waiters by providing more valuable services.

Might want to tell the waiters to apply for a job at GoDaddy.com!

So I guess I have the same questions as Dr. Bob, so what?

I leave you with two great quotes on Capitalism.

"Capitalism demands the best of every man - his rationality - and rewards him accordingly. It leaves every man free to choose the work he likes, to specialize in it, to trade his product for the products of others, and to go as far on the road of achievement as his ability and ambition will carry him." Ayn Rand

"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter."
Ayn Rand

Dear Bob,

And your point is?

Bob
bob parsons on Dec 16 2009, 11:17am  Reply
Dr.Bob,

My point is that in both cases, the waiters and your employees got what they earned by where and how they chose to work. If you don't like the results, do something different.

I guess I am sick of people knocking others for making a boat load of money through their own efforts like it is evil or something. As if it is taking away from someone else or that someone else should have claim to it. They earned it.

Knocking Capitalism, which is the main thing that has made and still makes our country great, seems to be the "in thing" with a lot of folks. Especially the leeches in DC these days and the lamestream media.

What most people don't realize is that Capitalism is not a Zero sum game. But the more wealth produced (no, is does not magically appear from government coffers, contrary to popular belief) by people using their minds and abilities to create it, the more there is to be had by everyone that works for it.

What is comes down to is that the original commenter was implying that you giving out bonuses was somehow wrong or evil when in fact, it is one of the very best things there is about business and should be encouraged to the fullest extent possible and even celebrated.

Hope this clears up what my point was. :)

Cheers and Merry Christmas,
Andrew

I would add that if you take too much from the other side, ie. you know they've given up something important that they absolutely need, then after the deal is done, they will take it out of you somehow, some way, in how they perform their side of the bargain. You need to be sure the deal works for both sides, not just your own. Otherwise the ill will this will surely generate will waste enormous amounts of your time in disputes and arguments, and you will likely wind up having to re-negotiating the deal later on. Worst still, you might wind up in a lawsuit.

WALK AWAY is RIGHT. Respectfully speaking, Bob had it right the first time. A WINNER WILL WALK AWAY, One of the many reasons that I have on this subject is simple, A winner came into the negotiation with a win win situation. Meaning that the winner had already done his homework before sitting down at the table to negotiate and had already prepaired a situation that was a win for him and a win for the other guy in which both would come out winners. Sort of like what I always say when describing what should be a 2 way relationship and that is " WE can carry up the whole treasure chest together if WE both grab a side and lift instead of grabing a handful in the hope that the gold will still be there when WE return." As for Adams statement on this vlog in regards to "STANDING TALL AND SAY YOUR LOSS", A WINNER does not have to use the words "your loss", it was already stated in the negotiation process and is emplied as well as understood. If it wasn't then you did not get your point accross while negotiating and that means you are not a winner. A WINNER WALKS AWAY AND FINDS ANOTHER WINNER. The WINNER WALKS AWAY FROM THE LOOSER HE LEFT AT THE TABLE! Winners do not have to tell people whom the winner is, they know it and the looser knows it to. SOOOOO MANY TIMES I HAVE WALKED AWAY FROM A DEAL ONLY TO FIND THE OTHER GUY HUNTING ME DOWN MINUTES, HOURS, or EVEN DAYS LATER. If they don't, who cares, go on to the next deal and just know that you did the right thing because A BAD DEAL IS WORSE THAN NO DEAL! Sincerely, John Cannon WWW.ARCADEMART.COM
John Cannon (http://www.arcademart.com) on Dec 15 2009, 04:15pm  Reply
Adam, that was a foolish thing to say. Sometimes a deal just doesn't fit, but that doesn't mean one can't be had in the future. Why cut off your nose by making an arrogant remark? You have to remember that we are working with humans, who have feelings, and memories. There is the 10/10/10 rule to sales...
1: It takes 10 minutes get a customer...
2: ...10 seconds to lose one...
3: ...and 10 years to get one back.
Those two simple words will cost you untold losses for the next 10 years! Think about it! Learn to be humble.

Your tips for negotiations are valid for macro and micro business deals.

I recently started an online business, through GoDaddy.com, selling knit hats made in Peru. In Peru negotiations are part of the fabric of life. It certainly helps to have keen negotiation skills when everyone wants to give you the gringo 'discount.' I will negotiate with taxi drivers until a consensus is reached or I walk away. Occasionally I have to increase the price I am willing to pay, but usually I find a driver that is willing to accept what I consider a fair price. The process is similar, albeit more nuanced, when I am buying my hats.

At 72 years of age, when I watch the news at night I can't read the scrolling script and hear what the commentator is saying. I liked the current vlog; however, I found the dangling earring a bit of a distraction. Every time you moved your head the earring bobbed, and for a moment or two I didn't hear a thing. I had the same problem when the "babe" came on the scene, but that was much greater, and appreciated, distraction, as I liked the way she bobbed.

7 th RULE OF PROCEDURE...& The single most important one. Hello BOB & EVERYONE Concerned, I have been in business Since I was almost 13 years old in 1979. (visit WWW.ARCADEMART.COM), My parents did not know that I began my company while working at Chuck E. Cheese in the arcade and using my $72 dollar a week net pay checks to buy my first of what became thousands of video games which resulted in my opening of 3 arcades before my 17th birthday. I took these SAME RULES OF BUSINESS PROCEDURE TO HEART when an elderly gentleman whom happened to be one of the largest carnival operators in the world rented games from me in 1985. When I offered that he could pay me after THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS (2nd largest fair in the world, 2nd only to THE WORLDS FAIR). THE MAN GAVE ME THE SAME RULES OF PROCEDURE OF DOING BUSINESS THAT YOU GAVE HERE PLUS ONE MORE. That one being, IF THE MAN WHOM YOU ARE DOING BUSINESS WILL NOT PAY YOU UNTIL YOU PROVIDE YOUR SERVICES SO THAT HE CAN IN TURN MAKE THE MONEY THAT HE NEEDS INORDER TO PAY YOU, THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO BUSINESS WITH HIM ANYWAY. There are at least 5 reasons for this one subject,Reason #1 If the man can not pay you now or at least half now, than he will not pay you later due to the fact that he cannont. Reason #2 You are not a bank and you are not his bank, if he is seeking finance from you, than it is because no-one will finance him and he does not have the money to pay you in the first place. Reason #3 is that the success of your business does not & should not depend on the success of your business but, getting paid for your services does. Reason #4 If you wanted a partner, you would have one and the only reason to end a partnership is when one of the partners "feels" like they are getting screwed, the funny thing about that is that feelings may or may not have anything to do with reality. You make a great point , their is a reason they dont have money to pay you and most likely because of bad business decisions. and if you give them the "credit' now you are stuck with the risk. so it better be worth it big time because 1 out 100 will work out for you.

Bob, I just took time out from drafting a proposal for a Call Centre to watch your Vlog. I am so glad I did!

You're no smoke and friendly fire approach, made me realise, that I need to harden up, quick! I often am prepared to lose a little and leave a sense of the 'odds' in favour of the other party. Now, I'm ready to front up with a pretty lady, sit back and listen more, enjoying the negotiating ride knowing clearly what I am negotiating for and why!

If negotiation doesnt go my way, I'll still get to leave with a pretty lady. Like I said, and you said, 'Know what you clearly want before negotiations start'.

Love ya Bob! You're one rough but kinda smooth negotiator. Seriously, you're Vlog was very informative and good practical business advice.

Thanks Mate.

Dear Bob, that vlog was amazing! I especially believe in the principle of NEVER allowing yourself to be pushed around. I spent $300,000 dollars for my degree from Temple Dental, as a Canadian from British Columbia. And I really mean, that I too, should have just subscribed to your vlog! It wasn't a total waste though, because, I found a way to bestow it on you! I added a "@DrBobParsonsNEGOTIATING" page to my website, with a Degree in the name of @DrBobParsons. You can download a copy and frame it. It looks awesome! And a note to noobies: stop wasting your time with loser self proclaimed gurus that post income statements or boats or fancy cars, They are all scammers. Join the Go Daddy team instead, by using ALL their services. And learn from Bobs vlogs! And another thing, NO HOST OUT THERE compares to the ease and time saving you will find at Go Daddy, and especially the telephone support, that alone, in my humble opinion (IMHO) is the #1 REASON to deal with Go Daddy. Oh, ya! Ooops! I almost forgot about the other good reason, the babes!!!!

Great information as always.

After watching this past season of the first season of Shark Tank, I thought you would be great in that format. Have you ever entertained the idea of trying something similar in vlog only format?

As an example of the show:

People could submit ideas for Internet start-ups, then you and Godaddy could decide if it would be worthy to partner with.

Your partnership could be Godaddy services. It would be a great way to showcase your newer products and reintroduce the overlooked ones.

Best,

Mr. Parsons - I just needed to let you know how your product(s) have helped me to find my purpose! In May '09 I designed and launched GetFreeWords.com using Website Tonight and people absolutely love it! "SO?!?!" - You ask...The amazing part is that I'm a total computer-retard and I am VISUALLY IMPAIRED...LEGALLY BLIND! I require magnification (assistive technology: devices and software) just to help me read! When the inconvenience of my progressive low vision disability robbed me of my driving privileges last year, I was devastated! I mean - I'm in my twenties, still! My hubby's a cop with a crazy schedule and I found myself stuck at home, trying to figure out what to do with my BA in English. I thought all hope and independence was lost...and then, I found GoDaddy. That discovery morphed me from aspiring author to exhausted writer, web-designer and entrepreneur. Inspired by the success of my GetFreeWords site, this month, I designed and am currently developing GiggleClassmate.com. During a call to the always-helpful GoDaddy Customer Service line, a rep viewed my page and commented that the concept behind Giggle Classmate was "incredibly unique"- he then paid me a bigger compliment by giving me the email address of GoDaddy's marketing dept. with instructions to ask if my site could be displayed as a demo. of a Website Tonight template - he thought what I put together looked that good! I was really encouraged! I just thought I'd toss the credit back to where credit is truly due - to YOU - the genius business mind that, with GoDaddy (and your super-entertaining blog episodes) empowers so many others to make their dreams a reality! Thank you so much for doing what you do! -Tres

The more I learn and use the tools of Website Tonight, the more I need tech support. There are times I cal as many as three or four times a day, at all hours. I have never spoken to someone that was not professional, nor truly patient.

You have a service that others I deal with could learn from as a model. As a former Marine Drill Instructor your Tec support remind me of my Platoons from the yellow footprints to Graduation, with a sprinkling of the "Sand Pits" in between.

I currently have ten domains and expect more to come. There is no doubt in my military mind I will continue receiving the same quality experience in the future.

Please do me a favor, travel to the tombs where you have them chained and pass on my kudos.

Once again you have provided solid business information for those looking to succeed. Speaking of negotiation Bob, for the amount of domain names that I own, I feel it is time for you to personally waive the silly "Discount Club Fee" from my account! It is funny how such a small fee can be such an irritation to what I believe to be a reasonably good client of GoDaddy. With that said, I am still happy to say that GoGaddy ROCKS! Keep up the good work Bob.
