After working as a service manager for a large RV company for 20 years and then finding myself out of a job after that company went bankrupt, I have spent the last year and a half working for small businesss trying to make them grow to get the loyal people that worked for me better jobs. I've spent countless hours reading, researching and driving myself crazy trying to do this. Hi Bob:

The business episodes are a hoot, but have a significant importance on rules for business (Oohrah). Many companies or company owners have no business plan and then wonder why the business faulters or fails. A lesson can be taken from Franchise businesses; as they (most of the time) are master minds; they lease you the name for 10 or 20 years, and charge you upto 10% (more/less) per month. Its a great model to understand, not necessarily buy into.

Keep up the awesome business messages, encouragement, and great entertainment. I hope the 2010 year is prosperous for all.

Bob,

I've had some bad experiences using other domain services yet I've fallen in love with Go Daddy. This message really hit home with the importance of personally connecting with your customers. I run a great feel good business that would be perfect for Go Daddy. Connecting person to person on the phone is important but picture this; an internet company going old school by staying in contact with there customers to relay how important each and every customer is. On or around there renewal date or any other time for that matter by sending them a glossy high quality greeting card with a Go Daddy picture and message of your choice, in your own handwriting by pushing a button on the computer, a physical greeting card is printed, stamped and mailed out for you. The best part is if done right it could not cost you a red cent but it could make you or anyone that joins and uses this business a whole lot of money. Look it up: www.sendoutcards.com/82138

Take care and thank you for all the great advice,

Hi Bob,
Thought I would share a backup to "Customer Service" being the key. I have been in the computer VAR market for the past 16 years. Yes I do remember Parsons Technology. I was recently let go from my most recent company. Here is the proof that great customer service works. Within 4 days 85% of my client base called and asked why I just don't start my own company as they would support me. I have managed the same Corporate clients for most of the last 16 years. So here I am checking out Go Daddy and putting the plan in action to start my own national computer VAR company. It is a challenge starting a business backwards, I have clients with orders, vendors ready to go and no legitimate company yet.

By the way welcome home brother, USAF Spectre crew 72-74.

Hi Bob,

I have had note pad a paper once I realized you were trully giving great advise. Im slowly developing my realestate buisness on the internet and the problem is volume. ( TOO MUCH...)
I deal only with rentals (thats my product) and the problem is to service to the customer and getting paid (well... Internet style). I cant get to everyone... Then my customer service goes to the tank. (The customer send like crappy notes to the BBB) So I shut my web site down then reload it. ( It pisses people off but what can I do??)
Then I had an oppertunity to expand nationally (truly to major cities at first)My buisness modle allowed for it, but for fear of the volume; I turned it down... My count was right on but my e-com took a sinker... ( No Dollas) HELP...
I ve gone thru from Ep # 17 to Ep #28; it eased the pain. But, what could I do to get the money for the E $ Commerce side of this buisness....

Hello Tricia,

Nice meeting your acquaintance :)

Please let me clarify. The video blog article is fun, lighthearted and funny. And a little sexy. I think Bob's style is fun, whimsical and humorous, I really like it overall. The information he shares is fantastic and the message sticks. Great stuff.

I also think Bob is one of the most customer-caring and innovative business minds of our day, and have since he founded Parsons Technologies.

However, the general protrayal of his girls in his videos does not really portray them as capable, intelligent and meant to be taken seriously and respected. No offense intended, but that doesn't come across. I was pretty surprised when he wrote in a response to a thread that they were capable and intelligent. I believe him but I never would have guessed from his commercials. I had exactly the opposite impression. Honestly. They come across and pretty and friendly, but not too bright.

The one exception is Danica Patrick when she's in her racing uniform. She's attractive but looks serious and accomplished as an athlete. It's great to see a capable woman in a very non-stereotypical profession like professional big-time car racing. I think that's fantastic.

To be clear, I would like to see more of Bob's girls cast in serious roles like that, portrayed as professional and capable, to be taken seriously. That could be done and still be light-hearted and fun, maybe even a little sexy sometimes. Would also add a little variety and appeal to a broader audience.

The commercial folling this video is fine until the stripper things gets started. That is just plain lewd. And that is the one thing I am really praying Bob does not do again.

The rest of what he does is not really over the top but the girls do come across as not terribly bright and sort of bimbo-like. I'm sorry for saying that but that's my impression. And I'm sure I'm not alone.

Some variety thrown in and some serious talent being shown like showing the poker player beating a bunch of guys or aother attractive women beating buys at things guys are typically better at like racing would be great. Or some more seriously-looking girls doing the business tips. Vary it up some, don't just show 'cute but not too bright' all the time.

Hope that clarified things better. Cheers, thanks and apologies if all that wasn't clear enough.
Robert Ash (http://www.pbase.com/robertash) on Jul 16 2009, 10:22pm  Reply
I just saw this commercial on television. It was mercifully short and thankfully did not show the lewd stripper-style display part after the initial chatting dialogue.

Thank you so much for that. I was appalled that something like this would be shown on TV, especially given that kids watch those programs. I disagree with your saying there is nothing anywhere @ GoDaddy.com that is disrespectful of women. This commercial certainly is.

But for the most part, your commercials are stereotypical and portray those girls as bimbo-like but they're mostly playful and light-hearted.

That said, there is a perception created by such portrayals that inherently goes with doing that, Bob, and there is no way around that, regardless of your statements to the contrary. The girls in your commercials do not come across as intelligent and capable like you say they are. They come across as quite attractive but not too bright. Much more as sex objects than as truly respectable women.

One of your key lessons in this video and all your others that I come away with is "don't deny reality - you can't define reality by your own rules". Customer service is vital. An edge is essential, etc.

The same goes for how you portray women. If you put them in the roles of pole-dancing strippers for commercials, that's how they'll be perceived. That's very disrespectful to women, even if they go along with it and some drooling males enjoy it.

If you portray them as cute but not too bright, then that's how they'll be perceived.

If you portray them as dignified, responsible business-people, then that's how they'll be perceived.

These rules, Bob, are every bit as iron-clad as the rules of business that you and cite so very well.

My personal prayer for you, Bob, is that you'll never make a commercial of this low character again. And that you'll also find innovative ways to portray your girls as more intelligent and keep your commercials whimsical, light-hearted and fun — without losing your wonderful "edge".

All the best,
Robert

Dear Laura,

Please know that I appreciate your business and the time you took to stop in and comment here. Also realize that we don't produce our commercials to entertain (although we often hear that they do). We produce them to generate business and that they do in spades.

In fact, the commercial you refer to has turned out to be one of our most productive ever in terms of new business generated.

With anything that works, there will be those for whom it lacks appeal. One might think that most women are turned off by our commercials, but our surveys which we relentlessly perform suggest otherwise. In fact, the majority rather like them.

While I realize and appreciate your right to NOT like them, also know that I'm somewhat caught in a bit of quandary. You see if I produce the commercials so that they will appeal to everyone, the net result in that they will be far less effective and much less noticed.

Thanks once again for your comment (and your patronage).

Bob, In regards to DC's comment- it may appear to people reading this that of course you would call him on it- So if you will- please allow one of your CUSTOMERS to repond. DC- I have been a customer of GoDaddy's for going on two years now, and I own/manage between 30-100 domain names give or take depending on my client's needs. I have been in the web development business since 1996 and in that time have dealt with almost every registrar out there- including many fly by nights. Whatever you feel that GoDaddy has done to 'rip you off', I can almost guarantee that this was not the case. GoDaddy is an amazing company, and one that we should all encourage considering all the real crooks out there. Every professional, highly technical and experienced Internet individual I meet all say the same thing- GoDaddy is a Gem. Obviously you never called their customer support or used their website to Update DNS/Transfer Domain names or even move a Domain name AWAY from them, all of which are easy and fast vs. the notorious difficult hoops other registrars make you jump through (i'm not mentioning any names besides the jerks at Network Solutions, Domain Central, Netfirms, Yahoo and a host of others...). After using GoDaddy, I cannot recommend them highly enough- and these videos Bob puts out (thank you for these and keep them coming, we ARE paying attention and we DO appreciate more than you know!) are a Gem when other company leaders are too busy to share what they have learned building a great customer focused business and a successful one to boot!

So DC, either you are just paranoid, mistaken or a competitor looking to steer people away from the company that keeps taking business from you. Why don't you just go work for them instead, or start really paying attention to these videos and offer them some competition right back? I guarantee you this- using GoDaddy is one of the best decisions any personal/professional Internet user can make when it comes to Domain Names.

I am not affiliated with GoDaddy in any way (not even as a reseller) except as a customer- and obviously an extremely satisfied one at that (actually blown away every time I have to call them at how quick my issue is resolved and I'm off the phone and back in business!)... I highly recommend Bob and his troop of Domain name experts to everyone reading this.

Bob, I beleive that I once read that you don't install toll free numbers bubecause they are prone to abuse.

Considering this Customer Service video blog, I wanted to question that practice. We work for customers across the country, EVERYONE is calling long distance. We use toll free lines on both our regular lines and also offer a toll free fax line.

In my opinion that accomplishes three things.
1. Having toll free numbers may IMPLY that a small internet based business may be larger and more established than it really is.
2. Allowing customers to contact us without long distance charges demonstrates that we are encourging them to call with questions or complaints.
3. Our local area code is 906. While it is a regular run-of-the-mill area code, people are leary of any 900-ish number. Giving out the toll free number eliminates this objection.

I wonder if you can confirm your opinions on toll free numbers and how it fits in with customer service.

Glen
Glen Pavlovich (http://www.commercialsbythedozen.com) on Jun 26 2009, 08:58am  Reply
Dear Glen,

I said that we don't use them because they simply are not necessary and are literally a waste of money. Most folks have unlimited long distance minutes on cell phones or call from their employer. Either way it costs them nothing. To that add the fact that our customers don't spend much time on hold and you get the point.

Bob
bob parsons on Jun 29 2009, 10:27pm  Reply
As the comments continue to pour in, the message continues to be heard, the only problem is how to interpret it.

One could take the message at its face value and think.... "Maybe people are upset at the allusions to sex?"

I'll jump the the point here: I think that yes, sex sells but I also think its not that simple. It's not about sex to godaddy, it's about sex to you (the viewer). Godaddy doesnt need it to be about sex. It just has to be attractive.

Pretty Women, <—- Rarety Points = Attractive
Fancy Cars, <—- Rarety Points = Attractive
Lots of Money, <—- Rarety Points = Attractive
Flashing or moving things <—- Rarety Points = Attractive

You get the point. They all seem to deliver a similar response...

He could have a babies cursing or show the inner lives of movie stars, but thats already done on tv.

Heres whats going on. Anything that's very attractive to people also makes them very reactive. They get happy more and they get unhappy more. Some people get upset at the LACK OF CONTROL because they watch/think/remember it when they dont want to.

Bottom line: Some people are drawn in when they don't want to be drawn in.

Maybe I'm upset because I cant stop watching when I have work to do, maybe my girlfriend is upset because she cant stop thinking the girl in the ad is prettier than her. Bob's right, if she knew the girl she would probably think she was a sweetheart, and if I knew her maybe Dana has a limp and I wouldn't watch anymore.

In the end, the message is clearer by the day that the message to be heard is "Some people are upset with their lack of control." and that Godaddy is forcing some of them to deal with it.

Well.... I dont know what the answer is, but I will continue to watch Bob go at it and as he finds more ways to:

A) Give people control back as long as they still come to his website, or
B) Make them just not care as much that they are out of control glued to his 6 minute clips

Either way I'm watching because a) I want to keep learning, and b) because I know when to stop watching if its going to be a problem for my relationship which due to the level of security... It's not.

"Like domain names for example"...Yeah, cos we all know your the biggest crook and domain name thief going round! I searched for a pretty obscure domain name in the address bar a couple of years back, and when I went to back check it a couple of days later, it was registered to your Go-Daddy as a 'parking site'. Ironically, after searching for information on your company, and finding out a bit more about you, I came across one of your Blog entries discouraging this exact practice...So I guess it takes one to know one eh? Or were you just annoyed that other dodgy companies were doing the same thing, and taking all your precious commodities?

The law regarding the practice of software-aided domain name acquisition without the domain in question having previously been registered to the particular company who owns it currently has too many loopholes in it, and needs to be put under more scrutiny. They're letting sheisters like you get away with too much dodgy internet business, and it really needs to stop. I'm from Australia where the trend of illegal (well in my opinion anyway) domain name acquisition and trading is virtually non-existent - So I guess judging by that, that age old saying really rings true - "Only in America!" :|

Someone else may have come behind you and registered the name you wanted, but I assure you that GoDaddy.com didn't and also didn't provide information to anyone that could have been used to register the name because you searched for it.

Bob, great advice on customer service, but the latest Danica video ad was disappointing. Way over the top on sleaz factor and woefully underdone on class. You might have had Danica approached by a macho male patrol officer and pulled in more humor from his surprise at Danica's disappointment that her speed was so slow...or something with a bit more taste. Not that pole dancing doesn't have its place, but the punchline did offer some recovery. Well done on that point.

Finally someone put it correctly-The customer is not always right, but the customer is always the customer-only one more caveat needed-unfortunately on rare occasions we have to end a customer relationship when it becomes a lose/win based relationship to maintain our own capacity to service the other 99% with superior service even when they are wrong. Great Video reminder!

Hi Bob! I am 63 years young and looking forward to profit from my reseller business.

Customer Service I was raised in a "mom and pop" grocery store. (our living quarters were connected to the store) My dad (Bob) would tell me: "If you don't treat the customer right, he'll go to Lou's down the street." Your video spiel on customer service hit the nail on the head.
Dad would also say: "You can shear a sheep several times, you only kill it once."
From the very start of doing business wth GoDaddy I have been impressed with your support team. That is primarily the reason I signed up as a "Proseler." I have a lot to learn, but I know I have access to undoubtibly the finest host company on the planet.
Oh, by the way, could you tone down the the "GoDaddy Girls," it stirs my libido and ticks off my wife of 37 years. rofol...just kidding.
Thanks for being there. Dom

I recommend godaddy.com to all of my clientele. I read through the comments and watched the commercial today.

At first I was adverse to the new commercial. More gyrating sex based advertising, but then it hit me...what am I talking about? Sex is the number one marketing tool in America. It doesn't matter what you're selling, put a hot girl or guy on the box and BAM you double your sales.

Yeah, you get a few people who make a lot of noise but they still look at your product, they talk about it, someone else hears it and BOOM another sale.

Keep making the commercials, keep pushing the envelope. Marketing is marketing. At least yours are obvious and straightforward.

I'll keep throwing clients your way and you just keep doing what you do!

I am still working on learning how to program websites and all of that. However, it is good that I have found a company that I can work with and offers good products.
I have also read some of the comments that others have made. And disagree with some of the comments that tend to be derogatory to Godaddy.com or Bob himself.
I just want to let you guys at Godaddy.com know that when I get all growed up and have my own business that I want to be just like Bob himself. Outgoing and confident enough to be his own self regardless of what other people say.

Customer Service is #1 and I am glad to hear you agree. I was raised in a coastal community and was taught this fact early. The customer is the life blood of a company and should be treated as such.

When a customer has difficulties with your business it is vital you help them. Even if that means the loss of a couple of dollars. They will bring other customers if they are satisfied and your losses will become your gains.

Thanks for your blogs, Scott

I agree up to a certain degree with your strategy.

However, no matter how good your customer service is, there will always be somebody who doesn't appreciate and give you a hard time all the times. Always.

Those people show their appreciation in increasing requests over time, one half complete payment ever, and unability to recognize their own limits and faults. There is no way to get rid of them, and since it is virtually impossible to come to a common agreement, it often comes close to an open war.

I'm talking about a single experience which lasts now for over a year, and for the whole period there was not one single case in which I could tell it was my fault. It took me all my patience and knowledge of over 20 years of customer service, to convince that one customer he was most of the times wrong. So I achieved he wasn't shouting at me at first just after taking the phone off hook.

My question is: do you have such customers, too? Does your strategy still apply or would you try to drop that one ASAP?

Giovanni

And the adds...well we all know "sex" sells. But "curiosity" sells even BETTER. Bring the two together....sheer genius. And the American Way. Thinking on their feet in your think tank they are!!!
As for Danica, a class act and a helluva driver. My wife and I are racing fans and we have followed her career closely. Can't wait for her to win Indy.

I agree. It is great that godaddy uses some women that have achieved success in a respectable profession. However, the fake-boobed bimbo crap is not needed. I am positive my primarily female customer base does not care for godaddy's TNA advertising. (Thankfully the ssl site seals are now available without godaddy on them.) The pricing and customer service are great. But, as soon as I find something better I will leave godaddy. If they ever decide not to portray women as skanks - I would be happy to be a godaddy customer.

I'm moving my sites because of the poor, almost void customer service at my existing hosting service. Moving around the internet and at the advice of my Web Designer I ended up on godaddy looking for a place to land my sites. Wandering and clicking within godaddy. somehow I got to this page. Being a female, senior citizen I liked and didn't like your video. I stayed through it because you had that "ADD COMMENT" on the lower right under the video and you were speaking truth about the importance of customer service. Then I read the comments others had left. Although your message was wonderful, throughout the clip, I could not figure out why godaddy had you on their site. There seemed no tie-in. I kept waiting for you to refer to godaddy and compare customer service or recommend them because of a personal experience or something. It wasn't until later, after I'd read though several comments from viewers that I realized that you are the President/CEO/in charge of marketing? of godaddy? Just curious as to your position...cuss regardless of your position you're one smart cookie!! The video seemed to assume I knew you and godaddy history. That too is clever marketing. I roamed even more to find the answer. All in all you did a great job.

Dear BOB (wanna be a sugar daddy) with all due respect - I’m sure you sometimes do manage to be funny and I admire the courage to try to be also on the ads.
but when we saw BOB we were about to ask for our 300 domains to be transferred. Fortunately we pressed a wrong button to show our partners and by mistake Danicas commercial (brilliant!)came on and so we decided to stay despite this little accident of getting to see the Sugar Daddy is not a candy. Next time you do a test I suggest putting Danica first when experimenting just in case the customers turns it off and doesn’t get to see the rest. But we still love GoDaddy so we will stay with you if you really value and post constructive feedback as well as only good commentaries. after all you are very brave to try this in spite the warnings, I am sure your marketing experts gently advised.
And we do appreciate very much the customer service on the phone, even if the customer service in training made some blunders that might insult a multilingual MBA marketing 1st place national mkt strategies award holders, who fortunately never gets insulted and finds this kind of unfunny blunder kind of funny that you would risk your company despite the careful warnings. So hurray to BOB for the courage, to try to prove the world otherwise and for not being too discouraged that , sometimes it is better to remain unseen and let the people dream. So despite us being Europeans as American, we have invested some domains with Godaddy, because we recognize their excellent marketing. You do not need to engage in the marketing of fear tactics, like explaining how bad the other companies are instead of how good yours is. Or threatening about what will happen if I do not purchase private registration, just because i called and asked to put all our domains under one account and then a phone person in training tried to sell us private registration for outrageous price when it is offered for free. But we are sure that as an excellent customer service effort you will make it up to us as always, so Hurray for Panica saves the DAY!! and for BOB who once again gets away! And yes Speed it UP –DANICA!!

Hello Bob,

I'm in the process of moving all of my domains to you guys and I just want to say.

You service is the best I have ever come a crossed. The Support people called ME.

You guys are always available to answer my questions no matter how big or small

My other "Service Provider" I would call and be on hold waiting for hours to get a hold of someone to fix or help me with my problem just to be told that the person that can fix the problem was not there and I would have to "Wait" till they got to it.
NICE

Thanks

I remember Parson's software catalogs arriving in the mail, and I believe I purchased one product or I really, really, wanted to.

Being a Christian, I was interested in the QuickVerse product. I miss those days and the catalogs!!

When I found out that Bob owned GoDaddy, I registered my domain name here, and I have three now! I'm looking to become a reseller soon. I love the IT industry, and have been active in it for 20 years.

I believe in Bob's vision, and I've seem something similar from Sam Walton (Wal-mart founder). I'm looking for companies and strategic partners that are customer-centric.

As for the marketing, well, it is definately edgy. However, Bob Parsons is a man of good character. There are definately greater issue battles out there than how Bob advertises GoDaddy. I wouldn't trust any of my web sites with anyone else.

I do sympathize with Karen, but I look at the whole issue of domain and hosting - which, by itself is very boring - and I like that Bob adds some spark to the business.

If you don't like the ads, don't watch them. I've never seen Bob's blog and I wanted to see what the big brouhaha was. Give me a bloody break, that wasn't even R rated compared to what's on TV today!! Get a grip, people, and learn to appreciate what Bob has done in the domain industry.

But the main selling point with GoDaddy is their customer service. Top notch.

Bob, keep up the good work!

God Bless!

I agree 100% with sticking to it and listening to your customers. The customer may not always be right, but the customer should always be happy from the beginning of the sale, and long after the purchase. Word of mouth is still the best convincing advertising.

Dear Bob,

I just wanted to let you know, how awesome your Office of the President is. Today I spoke with Jeff and Mandy to let them know that I have been applying for a position with GoDaddy now for 4 years. I purchased a house in Mesa, AZ and have always wanted to work for you and live there. But since I never heard any response from your recruting team. I offered a suggestion that I think would be very nice.

And that is once a position at GoDaddy has been fulfilled to respond to the candidates with a letter explaining that the position has been filled but not to give up, and that your resume will be kept on file, should anything that might meet your qualification you will be contacted.

This gives the candidates hope, and also enhances the GoDaddy's reputation as an efficient and professional organization, and you never know when you might have an opening down the road that this particular candidate could fit perfectly.

I hope you find this useful.

Sincerely,

Dan Ferrara

I own about 50 domains through Godaddy and have been a customer for years. I have referred you to 100's of people throughout the years. As a web guy who specializes in SEO I know the best of the best when it comes to the web and technology. Godaddy is the best without a doubt at what they do! And it's crazy that you can even call and get a live person on the phone who is even well trained! So I'm ion love with godaddy, and to read a post by some moron acusing you of bait in switch when it CLEARLY states the $6.99 price is on TRANSFERS. Is the recession so bad that she had to write a letter all pissed about paying $9.99 for a domain name? I paid around $40 for my first domain HeathLedger.com (before godaddy was around) — So to be able to pick up domain names today for under $10 is pretty cool. So I'm going to make you a deal...I will mail you $3 if you admit you are stupid.

I just logged on to thank you for running an excellent company when I saw your current video blog. Fitting that it was regarding customer service!
I called for support on Tuesday afternoon. Your service rep was outstanding! He was patient while trying to understand my problem and subsequent questions. He resolved my problem and verified that it was resolved on my end. He answered my questions, made service recommendations and implemented them without having a pushy sales approach. Overall, I was very impressed with the service that I was provided. As an added bonus, my wait time to speak to a service rep was less than 30 seconds! Very impressive!
Thank you for providing excellent products and services, stellar support and prices that are a fraction of other providers.

Love the ads and love your business model.

Have been a devoted client for 5+ years and have a few hundred domains with you. Your customer service is top notch, your marketing is controversial (which I love), and you are a great inspiration.

For those comments above that are negative about your ads... DON'T WATCH THEM THEN.

One of the big reasons Godaddy has done so well is that they are willing to push the edge, and offend a few people along the way (the people usually offended are not buyers anyhow).

Keep up the great work. Troy

I've been a loyal referring customer for 3 years, building websites, installing shopping carts and certificates, and an affiliate too. (A 38 year old Mom, and not too bad looking either.) I was embarassed when the "Godaddy Girls" started with Danica. It's really grown from that. I finally watched your blog today and one ad for the first time. Not totally tasteless, a bit funny, but I'll probably always have a hard time with marketing like this. I watched the race this weekend, and every time I heard "Danica" it was actually not a positive feeling, sorry to say. I can't help feeling both Danica and GoDaddy lost some points on branding with customers like me.

However, if you look me up, you'll see just how much I love your customer service. In fact, as marketing manager of a small, national software company, I'm using Godaddy as my example of excellent customer service as I lead our company to understand our customer, listen, and work to improve service.

Bob, I'm not sure what else to tell you. For me, it's not all plus marks. I understand the Godaddy Girls for marketing, and it's probably working great for your target market, so I really can't blame you. It's probably that you don't have many 38 year old Mom's as customers.

I'll still stick with ya, as I have from the birth of my company. This is probably as close as I will come to the Godaddy Girls.

I wish you the best. As long as my customers don't get weird about your marketing and branding, I'll stay.

Thanks, and good luck,

Seriously, does anyone buy or not buy, based on whether you have Hooters girls or not? I was buying your products before you went all "girly mag", and I'll keep buying your products as long as your pricing remains reasonable and your customer service remains the best; these are my criteria, not your ads. Which I do find funny and entertaining. They just don't cause me to buy or not buy your products.

First of all, why on earth would he or anyone else want to do that? Second, I doubt his wife is stupid enough to fall for something like that judging by her reasonable taste on this matter.

That latest ad was completely overboard and uncalled for. Saying you don't have to please everyone doesn't change that. Kids watch those programs and that ad sends a very bad message to them.

Your product is good and your business advice is good. Your commercials are cheesy but generally not terrible.

Your Las Vegas ad is certainly not good at all, and it's a bit sad that you're defending such a thing. Everyone makes mistakes or goes overboard at times and you certainly did on this one.

I like your 16 rules. My rule #17 has been "Admit when you're wrong or when you actually do go too far." For the Las Vegas ad that would be quite a good rule to apply and not just tell people making reasonable points and criticisms to lightnen up.

Looking forward to the next ad you mention below which will be is less inappropriate.

Oh, Bob. I forgot to add... Why not put your phone number out here? My wife would be glad to give you a call so you could "explain" your ads to her. LOL.
TMH on May 25 2009, 05:40pm  Reply
Yeah, sure Bob, I'm going to post my phone number to one of the largest viewed pages in the world. What are you smoking?

My wife is no prude and doesn't need the ads explained to her. We have a dance pole in our bedroom and she is quite expressive.

She has a problem with old white guys making a living off of women's body parts. You could have done just fine with your excellent service and products but you had to go using sex to try to sell even more.

It's a new day Bob and you need to get over exploiting half your audience to sell more services. Stick to the superior service and you'll do just fine.

It's a shame you couldn't support Danica just because she is an excellent driver, you had to get her into tight leather and shake her hair around. Has that really sold more domain names for you? And has it really done much for her?
TMH on May 25 2009, 03:38pm  Reply
Dear TMH,

Let me get this straight: Your wife pole dances for you (quite expressively) in your bedroom (on the pole dancing pole you've installed there) and she has a problem with our speeding ad. I'm inclined to think you're making this up buddy boy.

BTW, if you did post your phone number here I wouldn't publish the post. I do thank you however for the smile.

The Danica ad not only sold more domain names, but we had a landslide of business both during and after the Indy 500.

Finally, what's with the old white guy bit? You know, I'm part American Indian, so I'm not entirely white. Feel better now?

Excellent blog. I can't stress what you said enough about customers. I recently left a job for the way they treated a long time customer. I joined a company that shares your philosphy and I am much happier for it. I recently visited that customer and they are very disappointed with the previous company's support. They are losing a customer because they would not listen to the customer requests.

I have been a godaddy customer for years and I have experienced your technical support. It is a very knowledgable and helpful staff. It is obivous that you practice what you preach when it comes to customer support.

By they way, love the commercial! Keep it up it is clear that you enjoy what you do and have fun at it.

A gentleman named Leo LaPorte(?) has some kind of radio show concerned with PC usage. Today he dedicated a portion of his program to a lengthy diatribe about the "scantily clad young ladies" on GODADDY, and how inappropriate it is to use such content. After seeing this site, I can not believe Mr. LaPorte has a concern. I am in my fifties and live in Florida, where it is normal to see young women wearing much LESS than is featured on this site. The good news for "Dr. Bob" is that Leo's complaints are invaluable advertising for GODADDY. I never heard of GODADDY before hearing all that whining. Heaven help us all when it is wrong to be a pretty young girl.

Your message drove it home for me that I need to do more outreach with them. Bob, I missed the point of the commercial . . . will we ever get to where we don't need a half naked girl to sell product? Surprised Dancia Patrick agreed to it . . . but since she did and you did, it must pay off? Portraying women as bimbos makes you and your company look small.

I recently purchased my domain name and webhosting service from GoDaddy. I have to say that every tip you provided in this video blog for us is actually used by GoDaddy Customer Service.

The day after I set up my account at GoDaddy, I received a follow up phone call just to make sure everything was working right and to see if I had any questions they could help me on. It was not a sales call, it was an actual person calling to offer help and thanking me for my business.

Bob, thanks for the pearls of customer service wisdom on this video blog...and even more importantly, thanks for actually putting all this good advice to work in your own company. We, your customers, appreciate it.

Bob, this was some very useful information. I have to agree with several of the other bloggers, that sitting waiting for the next CSR to answer my call is mundane and useless in today's world.

I don't know if GoDaddy hosts NewEgg.com, but they have excellent customer service too. I've ordered a lot of Computer Equipment from them recently and they always answered my calls and emails immediately.

On Danika's new video, that was pretty hot. Of course, she is too. And yes, I know quite a few women like her and the young lady that portrayed the motorcycle cop. Very innocent looking, but let them lose on a dance floor or in private, watch out....... And yes, they are very intelligent.

Thanks again for the tips Bob. Your company rocks!

This was an extremely compelling and encouraging article. I've found your videos very informative and educational.

Yes, many of them are common sense but it's well-distilled. One of the most challenging aspects of successful business is constantly making sure the basic common sense aspects don't get neglected. The most outstanding champions always pay the most attention to basics and fundamentals. Well done. Yet again.

Regarding this specific commercial, for me it really crossed a line. GoDaddy commercials are edgy anyway and a bit silly, but light-hearted, quirky and fun. I don't think that's necessarily good but it's not hard to look past that. But this one was bit much. Personally I'd have preferred a Gecko or a Caveman this time.

In searching to try new things, be innovative and unique and push the envelope as you recommended earlier in this thread we're all bound to do some things that go overboard or don't work or whatever. Hopefully GoDaddy's next attempt at taking the next step will push the envelope in a slightly different direction.

Thanks, and all the best, you're doing us all a great, great service and helping us maybe more than even you know.

Sorry godaddy .... some two years ago I moved all my domains out of your company just because you mistreated me. You see: I live in Uruguay. Down here "spam" is not prohibited, nor even seen as a bad thing up to the point that government ISP / email service do it several times per year. I own a server which in turn hosted a website for one client of mine. He paid me for hosting and domain (which I bought in godaddy). My client decided to do some "spam". He paid a guy to do it and did not use my server. But in the spam, my client mentioned her website url. One guy elevated a complain in godaddy. Godaddy sent me a letter telling me that they would close all my registered domains unless I could prove that the mailing recipients gave their concent beforehand to receive it. I did not even what godady guy was talking about! It took me a day to find out what was all the fuzz about. I tried to reason with godaddy representative that I had nothing to do, but only gave hosting to the website owner, and helped her by buying the .net domain. It was of no use. It took me a couple of hours to find another registrar without such a gross way of verticalize a situation, and moved out. FUNNY THING: godaddy KEPT sendimg me your newsletters thru email. I asked you to stop them, to no avail. I even entered them as a "spam" report on your very own spam report form, as some kind of acid irony. Never managed to make YOU spam ME ! Hopefully, Bob, as you say you do, you will read this, and consider at the very least cut the spam over me. And consider also that for all means, you have been unfair to me. I cannot grab a weapon over my clients heads and make them NOT to do spam. I can only tell them. and if they anyway go and do it, and in the process mention a website which I host, with a domain name I bought you, you could warn me. EVEN -if at all, bad enough- take down THAT domain, but telling me "I Will cut all your domains down because ONE GUY submited a spam report, MENTIONING one of your registered domains" goes well off charts in customers good care, I would say. Mainly considering I am not in USA, and the supposed spam was only LOCAL to my country, and within law. From that day on, I always tell this tale when someone asks me what is the cheapest place to buy a domain. Cheap is "not worth it". YOu costed me in excess of 160 U$S, just to move all my domains away from your service, before your people would cut me, because someone uploaded one spam report (that could be VERY WELL faked, so the situation is even more dangerous than apparent). Regards, Enrique.

I read where there's a lady who wants something more stimulating to the womans eye, i.e., female eye candy. I'm not being cocky by saying this, but Bob when you're ready, I'm your guy! Who's says that the person has to be well known or famous already? Take the guy the world doesn't know about(me) and turn it into a hit, something no one ever expected. I'm a Vegas resident, I like your service too, I'm building an apparel line for athletics, Im a competing natural bodybuilder. I've worked for the big names, lamborghini, playboy, etc. But that's nothing. I said that to say I'm not the guy who says that, who everyone would laugh at, like is he kidding? But they can laugh with me instead. Anyway I just thought it would be fun to make this comment. I figured you would find humor in it. Lastly I understand the female figure in advertising and the allure. I don't argue that. I feel you grasp the elements of the female beauty, power, and intellect in your campaigns without making it back store porn like. See sex alone does not always sell, Sometimes being suggestive can do wonders. So I agree you're not promoting promiscuity like one said.

Hello Bob,

I'm a web designer, and I send all my clients to Go Daddy because of the exceptional service and easy-to-use interface. Your business certainly projects the confidence and competence any one would want in a web host. Your business is #1 in my book.

However, while using female promiscuity to sell your products and services to a certain niche, In general it does not seem honorable or professional, and some how cheapens the excellent service you provide. We don't need anymore broken homes. Is yours a place of trustworthy business or where cretins congregate? I think a place for trustworthy business.

Second, I also want you to know that Go Daddy in no way encourages promiscuity of any kind. While our recent commercial is admittedly a bit edgy, it is only that way in the sense of light hearted fun.

The reality is that our Go Daddy Girls are sharp, successful females who are all role models in their particular fields. That is not going to change.

I love your ads AND I love GoDaddy! You and your customer service people are the BEST!!! I tell everyone I know about you - often during workshops or coaching sessions that I do! Just one request - any chance you might just consider making a commercial that has a bit of WOW for your female customers? Your "GoDaddy gals" are great - however, there HAS to be a GoDaddy guy out there who would "stimulate" your female customers! Come on, Bob! Get some Adonis to take his shirt off for us!

We're going to shoot a new commercial next week. Hopefully that might be more to your liking.

i am working as a business developer and i am finding it very tough to sell the products.... what i need to do????
prithvi raj singh on May 22 2009, 05:35am  Reply
Dear prithvl,

Try something new every day. Sometimes it takes quite a while to find something that works.

Also you might consider joining local business groups and talking to others who have jobs similar to you. Sometimes listening to what they say is successful for them might get you on the right track. The big key here is to persevere until such time as you find the key to making sales happen.

bob parsons on May 22 2009, 08:48am  Reply
Mr. Parsons:
You talk about having great customer service which is true but I wish you had that same passion for your sales department about telling new customers what all their options are. Before I joined Godaddy none of your sales reps mentioned that I can join on a month-to-month basis and they always pitch me year plans and the only time that I knew I can pay on a month-to-month basis is when I asked. Don't tell me only one option to get the maximum return on a commission sheet.
Troy Mathews on May 22 2009, 04:22am  Reply
Dear Troy,

All our "pay by the year" plans come with signifiant discounts that make them a better deal for our customers. That's the main reason our sales staff pitches them. Also they can be cancelled at anytime, so unlike our competitors who offer no refunds on cancellation, it a customer decides to cancel, the program is refundable just like a customer signed up on a month to month basis.

So if you really want to pay on a monthly basis, just call customer service and have them refund you the prepayment and set you up monthly. We'd be happy to handle any way you like.

I love it when you walk the talk, Bob! These kinds of questions are an opportunity for you to put it out there. By the way, and speaking of putting it out there - I was relieved to see the finished version of the new GoDaddy ad. I was fearing something that would cheapen my experience....BUT it was very tastefully done, saved by the "lens placement" and the commentary from inside the car..good humor.
I'm experiencing your company personality since I am a new viewer. I am ultra impressed by your business acumen. Keep up the good work. You The Man, Bob.

Not very hot. In fact, seemed rather PG-13 for an 'internet only' video. I have faith that you know what needs to be done.

Hey Bob.

I really liked your video and I agree with your point but have you got any ideas for an internet marketer just starting out with a very little capital.

Dear Mohammad,

No doubt you need to keep your expenses within your means. That's not as confining as it first seems. Just start very small, and make small adjustments until you find what works, then do more. In some ways having a little capital to begin with is an advantage. Reason is that you'll pay much sharper attention to the results you get, and be sharper for it.

Two things:
1) I've got to get away from Prostores. It's not cheap, but it's easy...kind of like a bad relationship with bad drugs. I sincerely need a very specific bit of phone help/coaching from one of your guys to help me do that (take my URL away from them and build my own simple storefront) and make my site a REAL site, not just some eBay-b.s. subdomain wannabe. Drop me an email about which Go-Daddy dept to contact to make that happen, and I'll try to get my non-tech brain into change-over mode so that I can truly market my site/products.
2) Have you written a book yet? If so, what's the title? If not, let me help you do that. I'm a writer by trade, always keen to write from passion, knowledge, experience, and success. You need to be the next Donald Trump...and, from the video clips I've seen, you're a hell of a lot more likeable and marketable in the self-help/help-yourself publishing world...which, obviously, becomes a great marketing tool for your brand. Great stuff, and keep the girls smilin'!

Nice Jeep at the top of your web page! If you want some awesome off-roading, check out Moab, Utah, if you haven't already. It's the best! I'd wheel with you anytime. I'm actually heading there in the morning.
By the way...I love your 16 rules too.
Thanks!

Does go daddy only offer services for larger businesses? I want to post a website that sells my catering services locally only.
Right now i get Customers via word of mouth only. Does a company like mine need a website or just a newpaper ad? Yes i said newspaper (such an awful word)
Jose on May 21 2009, 01:06pm  Reply
Dear Jose,

Actually you need both. Look at your website as a dynamic brochure for your business. It used to be that it was a novelty for a business (particularly a small one to have a website). That's all changed. Now if your company doesn't have a web site of some sort, it indicates the business isn't to be taken seriously.

Another 5+ minutes of spot-on accuracy. #26 keeps the fire stoked. The new video format is cool too. Never stop improving!
Bob, I've got 3 action items that are akin to being the fastest ever to scorch the brickyard. How would one get past the mundane complacency and lead the pack to a checkered flag with these tools? Can a privateer ever really get a shot at the title, with stalled traffic in the way? Heck yea!
Run right past them all! I would like to race, Boss, got 5 minutes for a racers meeting?
Gaaaa-Run-Teed not a waste of time.

The part of the video showing the man with his head on the computer and the audio of "please hold, your call will be answered ....." was hysterical, but sadly true — I've been caught in this type customer service limbo countless times. If only more companies had Go Daddy's customer service!

The only thing that that takes my eye of your premium video production is that the vision seems to be interlaced and not progressive that causes horrible lines on the screen with your cuts and graphics. This is easily rectified by your production guys transcoding with care.

Love you, love your company.
